Ports, in fact, have always had, since the earliest frequentation of the seas, the role of great gateways to new cultures, from which departed that dense network of commercial exchanges that affected the entire Mediterranean. The sea and river routes, directories of various historical periods, made possible the occupation and development of new territories, the integration and exchange between peoples and ideas: they constituted and still constitute a fundamental factor of civilization.
The first part of the Conference will delve into the theme of the port system of Aquileia in antiquity, as well as the theme of ancient navigation in the Adriatic, bringing to attention the results of the latest ongoing investigations and the prospects for enhancement.
In the second part of the conference, the theme of ancient navigation, cultural interactions and trade in the rest of the Mediterranean basin will be explored, starting from the Phoenician-Punic era, through the Greek era to the Roman era.
Some cases of excellence in the field of displaying underwater archaeological heritage, in Italy, Spain and Cyprus, will also be recounted. It will conclude with a reflection on how the theme of sea know-how, of ancient ship carpentry techniques, which originated precisely in Phoenician times and are still used today in many places in the Mediterranean, can represent not only a tool for intercultural dialogue between the communities involved, but also a driving force for the valorization of these traditions as tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
The conference will be held on December 6, 2024, at the Ca' Tullio winery in Aquileia, hosted by the Aquileia Foundation, a member of the Phoenicians' Route. Publication of the conference proceedings is planned. The involvement of young people from the Municipality of Aquileia and neighboring municipalities is planned.
