The Mass of the broadsword has its roots in the first half of the 14th century. The Patriarch of Aquileia Bertrando di San Genesio, after conquering Cormons, was forced to celebrate Christmas Eve Mass in 1340 outdoors in Gorizia wearing war armour and imparting the blessing with a two-handed broadsword.
For centuries, this particular liturgy remained as the practice of the Gorizian Church at Holy Christmas celebrations. Having lost the Isonzo tradition, the mass is currently solemnly celebrated on Christmas Eve in the Patriarchal Basilica of Aquileia.
