21 December, the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere and the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere, is a date celebrated by mankind since ancient times. A fateful connotation of ‘the end of the world’, as widespread as it is unfounded, has been attributed to this day in 2012, reviving a recurring theme in mythologies and religions, as well as in fantasy and science fiction. Regardless of any more or less imaginative factors, this date can take on a symbolic meaning, as it effectively corresponds to a culminating phase in human history.
