European Carnival 2025

The European Carnival 2025 promises an unforgettable celebration of tradition, culture, and music. The main event takes place in Gorizia on February 22, following a special preview in Trieste on February 21.

The parade will feature 18 groups from Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Slovenia, and Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region, highlighting the Carnival’s cross-border and multicultural spirit. Each group will showcase elaborate costumes, spectacular choreographies, and musical performances reflecting their national traditions.

A unique highlight is Guggenmusik, a lively musical style from Basel, Switzerland, known for its deliberately raw and off-key arrangements. Originally tied to Carnival celebrations, it has evolved to include folk, marches, and waltzes, spreading to Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein.

With over 550 participants, the parade in Gorizia will create a vibrant atmosphere. The February 21 event in Trieste sets the stage, while on February 22, the parade will honor Nova Gorica and Gorizia as European Capital of Culture 2025.

At 12:00 PM, city mayors and the president of the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce will welcome the groups. At 3:00 PM, the parade will start from Piazza della Vittoria, following a 1.8 km circular route through Gorizia’s historic center, concluding back in the square with live band performances.

A large tent in Piazza della Vittoria, set up with the support of the National Alpini Association, will offer participants rest stops and hot meals.
