Dobrovo

Dobrovo
The centre of Brda and the seat of the municipality is Dobrovo, with just over 400 inhabitants, which is also the centre of the Brda wine-growing region. The town takes its name from the hollow oak, once the most widespread tree in Brda. In the immediate vicinity rises the mighty Dobrovo Castle, where you can see the permanent collection of graphic works by the world-famous painter Zoran Mušič and other occasional museum collections. It is also worth making time for one of the events taking place in the Knights' Hall or in the castle courtyard. The rooms on the first floor, which depict the life of the de Baguer family, and some of the original furnishings that have been returned, are particularly valuable for the history of the castle. In front of the municipal building there is a memorial to the fallen and victims of the Second World War, and in front of the entrance to the primary school there is a sculpture by Jakov Brdar depicting the poet Alojz Gradnik in his characteristic pose. You can also choose to take a guided tour of the Goriška Brda Wine Cellar, the largest cooperative wine cellar in Slovenia, established in 1957, which you can combine with a tasting and purchase of excellent Brda wines. The traditional Cherry Festival takes place every June in Dobrovo. From the town, where there is a pharmacy, a health centre, a post office, a school, a bank and a few shops, it is not far to any village in Brda, where you can go by car, motorbike, bicycle or even on foot.
