Parish Church of St. Martin, Šmartno

The main attraction of the village of Šmartno is the Baroque Church of St. Martin, the largest in the Brda region. Its bell tower was originally a defensive tower, and it houses a bell from 1857 featuring a depiction of the Three Wise Men. Inside, there are three magnificent marble altars, and a particularly remarkable piece is the white marble pulpit on the right side of the nave. The frescoes in the presbytery, the paintings behind the side altars, and the Stations of Via Crucis is were created by Tone Kralj (1900–1975), a Slovenian painter, graphic artist, and sculptor, who also decorated many other churches in the Primorska region.
