A city that holds centuries of European history: discover Gradisca through archival documents and historical reconstructions created with digital technologies.
The history of modern Europe can be found in just one city Some places encompass centuries of European history. Gradisca d’Isonzo is one of them: in the descriptions of the events concerning the town, the names of wars, peace, monarchs and illustrious figures appear that we have already met, including youngsters, in modern history books, from Mehmed II to Maria Theresa of Austria, Leonardo da Vinci and Radetzky. Its origin dates back to the Early Middle Ages: its position, along the valley of the Isonzo river, is strategic and, over time, Gradisca acquired the appearance of a real fortress. Later, in the16th century, it became a bastion defending the Venetian dominions against raids by the Turks. The most flourishing period for the town, however, was the following one: after the victory of the League of Cambrai at the expense of Venice, Gradisca entered the Austrian sphere of influence and also became the capital of a new county. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, Gradisca was enriched with new palaces that are still preserved today.
The urban and social development of this town are now described in this Museo Documentario, which makes use of various media and tools, including documents from its archive and historical reconstructions using state-of-the-art technologies.
