The villlage watched over by a castle perched on a high cliff that drops sheer into the sea The ancient village of Duino (Devin in Slovenian) is nestled between the southern slope of Mount Ermada/Grmada (323 m) and the white cliffs that drop dramatically into the Adriatic Sea. The romantic ruins of the old castle and the imposing fortress of the new castle with its rooms, park, bunker and breathtaking views can all be found in this beautiful village. The manor house, the former home of the Princes of Thurn and Taxis can be visited, along with its elegant garden. A stunning narrow alley, known as the "ulca," leads from the church along the castle walls, surrounded by charming houses. The village also features a marina, Dante’s islet, and the Cernizza/Črničje wood, crisscrossed by paths that lead to the paleontological site and the springs of the Timavo/Timava River. Mount Ermada offers an intriguing hiking experience with its sinkholes, caves, World War I trenches, and the ruins of Coische/Kohišče.
