Duino Regional Nature Reserve

Explore the reserve through one of its trails in the nature of the Karst region, such as the Rilke path, named after the famous Bohemian poet Rainer Maria Rilke.

The Duino Regional Nature Reserve spans 107 hectares along a stretch of land where the climate shifts from Central European to Mediterranean, a transition that is clearly visible. Its rich biodiversity creates a landscape of rare beauty, characterized by white limestone cliffs that plunge directly into the sea.

The Duino Cliffs, like the entire karst plateau, are composed of carbonate rocks formed from the sedimentation of animal shells on the floor of a shallow sea.
Although much of the Reserve is covered by typical continental vegetation, the protected area showcases the transition from forest to Mediterranean scrub. It consists of holm oaks and hornbeams, while closer to the sea, shrubs dominate the landscape.

The habitat is suitable for reptiles (such as snakes, vipers, and lizards) and serves as a nesting site for resident birds like the herring gull, common raven, and peregrine falcon, the latter of which is listed as an endangered species and has found refuge in the cliffs' most inaccessible areas.
In autumn and spring, it is easy to observe various migratory and wintering bird species, while the pine forest is home to finches, jays, woodpeckers, sparrowhawks, and even some colonies of squirrels.

The reserve can be explored on foot by choosing one of the trails that wind through lush greenery and nature with sea views, such as the picturesque Rilke Path. This famous trail, named after the Bohemian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, was opened in 1987. It stretches 1,700 meters and offers access to the nature reserve from either Sistiana or Duino.
