Gorizia’s Cathedral

Visit the Cathedral dedicated to Saints Hilary and Tatian, the patrons of the city of Gorizia.

Gorizia's Cathedral is dedicated to Patron Saints Hilary and Tatian.

Its origins date back to remote times: in fact, its existence is testified in 1296 and the first explicit reference to the church of S. Ellaro (St. Hilary) is contained in a document of 1342.

At the end of the 14th century, to handle the increase in the population, the church was enlarged and the new Gothic building was finished in 1525, as is recalled by a cornerstone of a counterfort.

The particularly beautiful and elegant musician angels depicted on the ceiling of St. Acathius' Chapel date back to the mid fifteenth century/early sixteenth century. Today the chapel is the vestibule of the sacristy.

The building was subjected to many other changes before acquiring its current form.One of the most revolutionary restoration phases was carried out between 1688 and 1702 when the only Gothic nave was pulled down. It was replaced by a Baroque church with a nave and two side aisles with two galleries and matronea and a large tribune for the organ and the choir above the central door.

The current façade, on the other hand, was completed only in the 19th century in Neoclassical style.
Among the remarkable works of historical and artistic interest, we also find the tombstone of the last Count of Gorizia - Leonardo - who died in Lienz in 1500.
