Miramare Sea Reserve

Visit the protected area of Miramare, located northwest of the city of Trieste. It's a point of interest for tourists, offering natural beauty and significant historical and cultural value.

The Miramare Marine Protected Area, the first established in Italy, extends around the Miramare promontory, just a few kilometers northwest of the city of Trieste.

The Reserve is located within a tourist hub that combines naturalistic and historical-cultural aspects. Just beyond, there are the park and Miramare Castle, a museum and historic residence of striking beauty; the Bio.Ma., the Immersive Museum of the Miramare Marine Protected Area, housed in the right wing of the former Miramare Stables.

One of the most fascinating activities to explore the marine biodiversity of this reserve is sea-watching of the seabed: an activity suitable for everyone since the only requirement is the ability to swim and use basic equipment such as a mask, snorkel, and fins.

The Miramare Marine Protected Area, managed by WWF Italy on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment, has participated since the 1970s in the “Man and the Biosphere” (MaB) Programme, an intergovernmental initiative launched in 1971 during the 16th UNESCO General Conference. Its aim is to provide scientific foundations for actions promoting the sustainable and rational use, as well as the conservation, of the so-called "biosphere", while at the same time encouraging balanced management strategies relationship between humans and the environment on a global scale.
