The Shrine of Mount Grisa

Visit the National Shrine of Mary Mother and Queen on Mount Grisa, which overlooks the city of Trieste and its gulf.
With its massive structure, the National Shrine of Mary Mother and Queen on Mount Grisa towers over the city of Trieste and its gulf.In 1945, the Archbishop of Trieste Antonio Santin made a vow to the Virgin Mary in which he pleaded for the salvation of the city threatened with destruction by the war. In 1948, after the end of the conflict, Archbishop Strazzacappa proposed to build a national shrine dedicated to Mary in Trieste with the contribution of all the dioceses in Italy.
In 1959, Pope John XXIII decided that the Temple would be dedicated to Mary Mother and Queen as the symbol of peace and unity among all peoples.
From April to September of that year, what became known as the "Pilgrimage of Wonders" took place: the statue of Our Lady of Fatima passed through several Italian cities and reached Trieste, welcomed by the Archbishop, on September 17 1959. Two days later, the foundation stone of the great temple was set on Mount Grisa. On September 20, the holy simulacrum was returned to the Chapel of Fatima, but some time later the Bishop of Fatima, Monsignor Joao Pereira Venancio, delivered a copy to Trieste by ship.
On May 22 1966, the shrine was consecrated and the pilgrimages from Italy and all over the world also started to take place.
Since 2011, the Temple has been proud to feature a choir that sings in Gregorian style during religious ceremonies: the Coro Incanto Gregoriano. In addition to the customary chants of the Mass, the group also performs magnificent psalms and litanies that the Gregorian that, regularly, enhance spirituality, devotion and the atmosphere of the Sacred.
