Cycling trails in Miren Kras

Cycling to the most beautiful views.

Take in all the views stretching from the Vipava Valley and Karst, filled with inebriating scents of pine trees and herbs that can only be found in this region of the Mediterranean and karst world. Embrace the green landscapes stretching from the Julian Alps to the Gulf of Trieste. And you are quite quicker on a bike. There are 5 marked mountain cycling trails of different lengths and difficulty grades (10 to 22 km). While cycling on those trails, you will be astonished by the picturesqueness of the landscape and views.

In which direction will you roll those pedals? Cycle amidst the dry-stoned walls of Karst that protect the red karst soil from the wind. Ride amidst the vineyards that will awaken your thoughts of Teran wine. Cycle between the eastern tops of Črni hribi hills from Cerje to Fajti hrib and Trstelj, which is the highest hill of Karst. Here, you can admire the view of the Julian Alps, the green fields around Orehovlje and the blue colour of the Vipava River. The cycling section of the Walk of Peace runs from Miren to Komen.

On the other side of the Črni hribi hills, ride between the picturesque villages to Opatje selo, known for the unique tradition of lash making, between the panoramic hills to Brestovica, where you can on a sunny and clear day see the ships and sail boats in the Gulf of Trieste. One of the starting points is Kostanjevica na Krasu that bathes in the sun rays in the valley amidst the Črni hribi hills.

Along The Northern Sightseeing Edge Of Karst
Distance: 20,7 km
Altitude difference: 410 m
Difficulty: intermediately demamding

The start of the path is at the square in the middle of the village Kostanjevica na Krasu. At the crossroad we turn towards the village Novelo and then past Temnica. At the crossroad below Teminca, we turn left and stay on the road which leads to Renče. Soon, a sightpost directs us right, onto the road for Trstelj (642m), the highest peak of the western part of Karst. From peak, we return above the cottage, where we find the start of the driveways. This leads us through the forest and onto the northern part of the hill. On the ridge bettween Trstelj and Stol , we join a wide forest road. We ride under Stol, Stolovec and Vrtovka, arriving to the road Temnica - Renče. We descend to the first turn under the Renški vrh and ride along the path under Veliki vrh and Fajti hrib. Under Cerje, we descend towards Lokvica. Even before the village, we take a sharp turn left and ride past the cave Pečinka and stone thrown of Borojević, taking a gravel road to Kostanjevica.

Špik hill by bicycle:

Difficulty: easy

Start your ride in the village of Hudi Log at the renovated water reservoirand continue along the paved road in the direction of the village  of Korita na Krasu. After about 750m, turn left onto the gravelroad that leads to Kostanjevica na Krasu. At first crossroad, turn right and just before the village again hard to the right in the direction of Sela na Krasu. After 1,2 km, a gravel road brings you to the crossroad wehere you turn left and continue up the main road. Just before the village of Sela na Krasu turn again left on the paved road to Vojščica. Continue cycling through the village. After about 120 m, turn left in the direction of Nova Vas. This is the most beautiful part of the route with the view over the village of Brestovica from the top of the peak Špik or over the Gulf of Trieste from the peak Kremenjak. On the side of the road stands a restored frontier wathch tower, which in good weather offers a great view over Julian Alps, Venice and the peak Snežnik. TUrn right just before the village of Nova Vas and continue along the road for about 1,5 km to finish your ride at the start in the village Hudi Log.

From Srnjak hill to Kremenjak hill:

Difficulty: easy

The shorter cycling route starts in the village of Sela na Krasu at the bowling ally on Kal. Ride along the paved road through the village to reach the village of Hudi Log. At the beginning of Hudi Log, turn left onto the gravel road and at the first crrosroad turn left in the direction of Korita na Krasu. After about 700m, turn right at the crossroad. The path leads over the hill Srnjak to the peak Kremenjak which offers incredibile views over the Gulf of Trieste and the shipyard in Monfalcone. Descent from Kremenjak, turn right at the bottom and take a gravel road to return to Sela na Krasu.

A cycling route that crosses the border begind in Kranjska Gora. We reach Miren by riding an arranged cycling path from Vrtojba. In Miren, we may see the museum Spomni se name (Remember me) whisch is located in the graveyard and the Shoemakers Museum. At the end of the settlement, a winding path leads onto the Miren castle and the Church Žalostne Matere Božje.
But we ride fot around 300 m more, where the gravel path turns right towards the climb Nad Logem. We continue along the route to the asphalt road Miren - Opatje Selo. We ride past the parking lot on the left side and turn towards the settlement Lokvica at the first crossroad. On the crossing of the paths Kostanjevica na Krasu  - Opatje selo, we ride in the direction of Selo na Krasu. The route leads us through the settlements Hudi Log, Korita na Krasu, Sela na Krasu. At the crossroads by Osmica, we turn towards Vojščica. We ride through the settlement and turn towards Kostanjevica na Krasu at the crossroads. Soon, we notice a turn towards Teminca on the right.  We ride through the settlement, descend onto the road under the village and then ride towards the village Lipa. In the end we turn towards Komen.
