The Karst by bike

Explore the Karst landscape by bike: visit the Monument of Peace, the village of Štanjel, and the garden of architect Max Fabiani. Taste local culinary specialties, from Karst prosciutto to Terrano wine.
You are invited to wander around the northern part of the Karst Plateau. Among the pine trees, stones and vineyards of the hardy Karst vine, there are fairy-tale villages, where clustered stone houses with high walls invite you for a glass of Teran and a feta of Karst prosciutto.
We will start the day on the edge of the Karst plateau at the imposing 25-metre high Monument to Peace on Cerje, which watches over Gorizia, the Karst, the Vipava Valley, the Friulian Plain and the Adriatic Sea. At the Peace Tree, we will walk through the story of history on seven floors and, at the top, gaze at the view of the surroundings and a peaceful future.
We'll cycle through remote Karst villages and stop for a spectacular view of the Adriatic Sea and the Gulf of Trieste and the Friulian Plain in nearby Italy. The cycling takes place on 12 km of gravel and asphalt paths.
Lunch will be eaten in a local village inn, where local seasonal food and wine will be served.
In the afternoon, we will explore the picturesque village of Štanjel and walk through the garden of the renowned architect Max Fabijani, the pioneer of "Art Nouveau" in our country. If you wish, you can also visit the gallery of the renowned graphic artist Lojze Spacal or have a coffee in the castle courtyard.
We will finish the day at the farmhouse with a tasting of home-made cured meats. Over a glass of Kraško terrine, the owner will tell the story of the hand-cut Kraško prosciutto.
