Kluže Fort

The mighty fortress above the Koritnica gorge, which is an important monument of defense against Turkish invasions, Napoleon's army and attacks in the First World War.

The story of the Kluža fortress is caught in the extraordinary nature, between the steep slopes of Rombon, Slemena and the Koritnica riverbed. In the 15th century, the Kluža fortress was a wooden fort intended to prevent Turkish incursions into Carinthia. Later, a stone fortress was built, which in the 18th century was defended by an Austrian garrison against the army of General Napoleon Bonaparte. The fortress got its present appearance in the 19th century, and in the 20th century it played an important role on the Soča front.

Fort Hermann was built as a support for the Kluže fortress during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the First World War, it was heavily damaged by heavy Italian shelling. Today, there are information boards near the ruins of the fortress. To discover the underground of Koritnica, you can walk through the 400m-long tunnel under the Kluža mountain.
