The Ljubljana Manifesto of Higher-Level Reading, unveiled at the 2023 Frankfurt Book Fair, underscores the significance of engaging with longer texts, humanities, and fiction as crucial tools for understanding and articulating the complexities of the contemporary world. According to the manifesto, such reading is vital not only for personal growth but also for fostering interpersonal relationships, strengthening broader social dynamics, and, importantly, preserving democracy.
This principle serves as the central tenet of the Festival of Complexity, a year-long literary program that brings together a diverse range of voices—poets, writers, journalists, and theorists—to explore current crises. While the program may not provide definitive answers, it aims to pose the right questions. The program’s centerpiece will be the 10th edition of the Mesto knjige (City of Books) festival and book fair, scheduled to take place from 29 August 29 to 6 September.
