Three points of view FOR GO! 2025

Three great protagonists of contemporary photography will tell the story of the Italian-Slovenian border and the cities of Gorizia and Nova Gorica through three exclusive reportages, which will become a major exhibition presented in 2025 on the occasion of the celebrations that will see the two cities of the Isonzo area jointly awarded the title of European Capital of Culture.

The American Steve McCurry, the Italian Alex Majoli and the Slovenian Meta Krese, will be the exceptional visual witnesses of three different and personal incursions into the border area developed around the theme of relations between the two different peoples, their past and present history, collective and individual memories, conflicts, identities, and the construction of a future of peace and brotherhood. The context for which the project is intended is GO! BORDERLESS, the extremely rich programme of events that will accompany the entire year 2025 in which the cities of Nova Gorica and Gorizia will be jointly engaged in the project to celebrate in a cross-border spirit the awarding of the title of European Capital of Culture to the two cities once divided by the Iron Curtain.

The project is curated by CRAF_Centro di Ricerca e Archiviazione della Fotografia and strongly desired and supported by the Autonomous Region of FVG in collaboration with Ente Regionale Patrimonio Culturale della Regione FVG. Tre sguardi stems from the idea of offering, to the citizens and the many visitors expected in the two cities during the year of the celebrations foreseen by the official programme, a large photographic exhibition sup ported by a richly illustrated catalogue, intended as the final outcome of a photographic campaign on the two cities, the surrounding territory and their inhabitants, entrusted to three protagonists of photo-reportage of consequent expressive authority, entrusted with the task of collecting unpublished visual material inspired by the spirit and the founding themes of the event. The project aims to highlight the different and peculiar visual approach of the three authors in charge, one of Italian nationality and culture, Alex Majoli, Slovenian, Meta Krese, and one from a non-European geographical area, in this case the United States, represented by Steve Mc Curry. If Majoli and Krese will find themselves immersed in a more familiar and recognisable environment and cultural dimension, also dictated by their knowledge of at least one of the two languages and by the peculiar history of the two cities, thus being able to generate a more emotionally participatory approach, McCurry's gaze will be able to offer an external point of view, with unpredictable and stimulating outcomes.

In this way, the diversity of the visual and narrative modules used, the different cultural backgrounds of the three authors, will be particularly significant in what will then be presented in the photographic exhibition and the publication of the three catalogues (one per author) edited by Alvise Rampini and Michele Smargiassi. A narrative with different voices, developed on the basis of the three different proposals, hopefully capable of merging the power of storytelling of traditional photography with the iconic suggestions of contemporary media. The leitmotif of the ECOC nomination in Nova Gorica - GO! BORDERLESS - is the coexistence and cooperation between the two countries, especially in the border area, and the peculiar condition of the two cities, now also united in terms of town planning, is its most powerful symbol.
