The exceptional gangster rapper from Primorska, Smaal Tokk, will perform at the Borderless Party on the lawn in front of the Nova Gorica Town Hall on 6 September 2024.
The event, organised as part of the preparations for the European Capital of Culture 2025, will bring together outstanding musicians and create an unforgettable atmosphere, uniting locals and visitors alike.
Smaal Tokk is the alter ego of Marko Bratuš, the artistic director of the Slovenian National Theatre SNG in Nova Gorica, and one of the most original musical figures in the Primorska region. Although he introduces himself as a "gangster rapper from Primorska," his music and performances go well beyond conventional rap. Smaal Tokk blends humorous and socially critical lyrics, delivered in a distinctive dialect, with a range of musical genres. His performances are a real treat for fans of satire, as his lyrics explore themes such as everyday struggles, mid-life crises, and personal existential issues. His popularity has grown thanks to his genuine irony and the wisdom he conveys, often intertwining fictional stories with the real challenges of modern life.
Smaal Tokk is not merely a musical project but also a critical reflection of society, highlighting real difficulties and issues through the lens of humour. On stage, he is accompanied by a group of exceptional musicians, including singer and flautist Maša Cilenšek and drummer Janez Zrnec, who add to the uniqueness of his performances. With his distinctive musical and performance style, Smaal Tokk embodies the values of the European Capital of Culture: cultural diversity, innovation, and creativity. His style resonates across generations, keeping the spirit and humour of the Slovenian coast vibrant and engaging on stage.
