The symbolic place of the union between Nova Gorica and Gorizia is getting ready to shine under the spotlight of the European Capital of Culture 2025.
A month ago, construction began on Piazza Transalpina/Trg Evrope, one of the most significant interventions within the so-called ECoC District, which will become the main venue for the events of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica-Gorizia.
The symbolic importance of the square is undeniable: situated at the crossroads between Italy and Slovenia, Trg Evrope has always been a meeting point and exchange hub between the two communities, going beyond geographical and cultural boundaries. Today, with the start of the construction works, it's ready to become the epicenter of cultural, social, and economic activities.
The construction site represents a tangible sign of the joint commitment to transform the square into a welcoming and vibrant space, while preserving its historical elements. The improvements planned for the ECoC District aim to enhance it with a new lighting system and other urban furniture elements such as benches, bicycle racks, new greenery, with different benefits.
First, the redevelopment of Trg Evrope will result in increased attractiveness of the "two Gorizias" as tourist destinations. Thanks to a revitalized and vibrant square, visitors will be encouraged to explore the cultural and natural beauties of the two cities, contributing to their economic growth and the well-being of local communities.
Then, it will be the citizens themselves who will benefit from new public and entertainment spaces. The square will become a place of gathering and participation, with cultural events, concerts, art exhibitions, and much more.
Finally, Trg Evrope will become a symbol of unity and cooperation between the two communities. Through art and culture, the two Gorizias will continue to cultivate ever closer ties, overcoming their geographical and linguistic barriers.
The redevelopment project is based on the collaboration between institutions from both countries: the Municipalities of Nova Gorica and Gorizia, the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the Republic of Slovenia. The Italian company ICI COOP is the main contractor, with a contract of almost 2.9 million euros, financed through the Regional Operational Programme FVG (POR FESR 2021-2027), and the Slovenian National Operational Programme (PO 2021-2027). Among the entities involved, there are also the Directorate of Infrastructure of the Republic of Slovenia (DRSI), tasked with the modernization of the Nova Gorica railway station, and Nomago, the public transport agency responsible for changes to bus stops during the redevelopment works.
The closure of the construction site is expected by the end of the year. The EGTC GO, responsible for the project, coordinates the work with other authorities and provides updates through its official channels.
If you want to submit an event in Trg Evrope and receive more information about the requirements of the two countries, refer to the handbook prepared by the EGTC GO (thanks to the B-solutions project).
