In Friuli Venezia Giulia there are only two karst lakes: Doberdò and Pietrarossa lakes, both belonging to the homonymous Nature Reserve located in the Municipality of Gorizia.

The area features two karst depressions partially occupied by lakes and separated by a ridge. The larger depression houses the Doberdò lake, one of the few karst lakes in Europe. Its water level varies with the levels of the Vipacco and Isonzo rivers.

The springs are located in the occidental side of the lake. In the oriental sector, instead, there are the sinkholes. During the drier period, its water level drops and the lake surface is reduced to canals and small pools.

Activities:
The visitors' centre Gradina organize guided tours and other teaching activities. It houses also an interactive exposition that shows the Karst in its natural, historical and cultural aspects.
