16th Borderless Border Walk

PD Brda invites you to the traditional 16th Borderless Border Walk on 22 December 2024.

Slovenia became a member of the Schengen area in December 2007. The border that for many years divided the province of Goriška brda in the western part of Slovenia and Collio in Italy has fallen. At this euphoric time, the idea was born to commemorate this event in Brda in a special way, with a march along the then former border. The initiator of this idea was Mr Toni Gomišček, the then manager of the Brda Wine Cellar. He invited the Brda Mountaineering Association to join him and so it began. The basic idea was to walk along the former paths of the border guards. These were the soldiers who guarded the national border. Due to the length of the part of the border that borders Brda, the walk was divided into four stages.

The first march took place on 22 December 2007. The part of the border between Nebli and Gornji Cerovi was chosen, mainly because this part seemed to be the most passable. The border guards had long since disappeared and nobody maintained these paths. But in Brda, wherever we go, there are hills to climb and valleys to descend between them. In return, we are offered ever new and interesting views. The second hike was along the part of the border from Gornji Cerovo, past Hum to Sabotino. On the third one, we returned to the north-western Brda Mountains. This was the most challenging part of the border, as we walked from Gole Brdo to Nebleg. This part, with its streams and almost veritable primeval forest, is not usually visited by people anymore. We saved the stage from Gole Brdo to Britof for the end. The thick snow cover made this one interesting too, and we are not used to snow in Brda.

What now? The line has been crossed, the goal has been met. After some reflection, we decided to continue with the hikes. But we will not repeat them, but set them up a little differently. We will still walk close to the border, but also a little bit in the interior of Brda. However, as Brda also extends on the other side of the border, we will also go there and get to know villages that used to be harder for us to reach. These will be easy circular hikes of 4 to 5 hours. We will always see a natural or cultural landmark and learn something new.
