The Italians of Austria-Hungary in the sunset of the Empire: language and culture

Study conference on the cultural and linguistic dimensions of the Italians of Austria-Hungary organized by the Institute of Social and Religious History of Gorizia together with the Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino and in collaboration with the University of Vienna.

The conference “The Italians of Austria-Hungary in the sunset of the Empire: language and culture” (Gorizia, University Pole of Santa Chiara, April 11-12, 2025) aims to investigate the cultural and linguistic dimension of one of the national groups of Goriziano, the Italian one, in a comparative perspective with the situation of the other regions of the Dual Monarchy with Italian presences (from Trentino to Dalmatia).

The participation of international scholars qualifies the conference as a moment of in-depth and high level study, with an authentic European perspective. The conference, curated by Maddalena Guiotto and Gualtiero Boaglio, is organized by the Institute of Social and Religious History of Gorizia, always careful to propose moments of meeting and study dedicated to the complex reality of Goriziano (beyond the current borders), together with the Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino and in collaboration with the University of Vienna.

Speakers: Andreas Gottsmann (Austrian Historical Institute in Rome), Gualtiero Boaglio (University of Vienna), Alessandra Tiddia (MART, Rovereto), Maddalena Guiotto (Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino), Stefan Malfèr (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna), Ivan Portelli (Institute of Social and Religious History, Gorizia), Renate Lunzer (University of Vienna), Francesco Toncich (University of Ljubljana), Lena Sadovski (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna), Corinna Gerbaz Giuliano (University of Fiume/Rijeka), Quinto Antonelli (Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino).
