The Retrospective East/West – Border through Film and History

Kinoatelje is organising a retrospective offering a cinematic insight into the complex history and cultural dynamics of the border area between Slovenia and Italy.
The retrospective East/West – Border through film and history is part of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia and offers a cinematic insight into the complex history and cultural dynamics of the border area between Slovenia and Italy.
The all-day event, which will take place on Thursday 10 April 2025 at the Film House / Kinemax in Gorizia, explores life at the crossroads of nations, ideologies and social change through carefully selected film screenings, talks with filmmakers and a round table discussion. Borders are not only seen as dividing lines, but as spaces of passage, exchange and connection.
The morning programme starts with a screening of Zoran, my idiot nephew (dir. Matteo Oleotto), one of the first Slovenian-Italian co-productions. Each screening will be accompanied by discussions with the authors.
In the afternoon, a special film walk through Gorizia will be organised, while the main panel discussion will host renowned historians, journalists and filmmakers who will shed light on the multicultural heritage of the border area.
The day will conclude with the opening ceremony of the retrospective, followed by a screening of archival and contemporary short films about life along the border. Through the film stories, the retrospective opens a space for reflection on the past, present and future of border communities.
A free shuttle bus service is organised for visitors from Ljubljana (departs at 11:00 from the Tivoli car park upon prior registration).
