Celtic Hypogeum

Explore the underground cave system, dug into the rock, located in the center of Cividale del Friuli.

The Celtic Hypogeum is a charming and mysterious site, in the centre of Cividale del Friuli.
Walk down the steep flight of steps and enter the "bowels" of the Earth. You will find a system of underground cavities, dug in the rock, with a central room from which three low corridors branch off.

In fact, it seems that the Celtic Hypogeum was obtained from a natural cavity along the right rocky bank of the Natisone river, which flows under it. Look, in the walls, at the loculi and niches, the brackets and the three mascarons and then give your interpretation: is it Celtic funerary art or a Roman and Lombard prison? The original function of the Celtic Hypogeum, a very peculiar site that has no match in Friuli Venezia Giulia, is still unknown.

Access to the site is allowed exclusively through the guided tour service organised by the Municipality of Cividale and the Regional College of Caving Guides and Caving Masters of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Visits to the Celtic Hypogeum require the payment of an entrance fee and reservation is strongly recommended
