Grado Lagoon

Explore the wonderful natural setting where Grado is located, amidst the lush greenery and the blue of the Adriatic Sea.

The lagoon is a spectacular natural setting in which Grado lies, extending from Fossalon di Grado to the island of Anfora, at the height of the mouth of the Ausa and Corno rivers.

The colours of nature 
The Grado lagoon offers a landscape rich in colours with the green of the luxuriant vegetation and the blue of the Adriatic sea. 
A small fantastic world, immersed in the calm of nature with the intertwining canals and streams, paths of faith of ancient origin as witnessed by the Sanctuary of Mary of the Island of Barbana, one of the most visited in Italy. 




The Grado "casoni" (fishermen's huts) 
An area rich in history in which archaeological finds reveal the ancient Roman road, now completely covered by water, that connected Aquileia to Grado. And the presence of the casoni, characteristic housing with straw roofs, takes us back to the time they were inhabited by fishermen. 

The flora and fauna 
The lagoon is an area fertile in trees, in particular, tamarisk, elm, poplar, junipers and pines, whilst the fauna presents a considerable variety of birds such as gulls, grey herons, wild ducks, sea swallows. 

Treasures to be discovered… 
If you are passionate about bird watching, if you love nature or you want to satisfy your curiosity, you can observe the beauty of the flora and fauna of the lagoon in the enchanting protected areas of the River Isonzo Mouth Reserve and the Valle Cavanata Reserve.

You can take further interesting boat trips on the Grado lagoon to fully discover the wonders of the Island of the Sun.

Events in the lagoon:
The "Perdòn di Barbana" 
Don't miss the traditional and fascinating celebration held on each first Sunday of July in the Grado lagoon. An evocative procession of boats, decorated with magnificent garlands of flowers, arrives at the sanctuary of Mary on the Island of Barbana to honour the ancient vow that the people of Grado made to the Madonna to stop a terrible plague epidemic Following Mass the procession returns to Grado with singing, prayers and bell ringing. 

"Graisana" open regatta 
The historic and spectacular regatta is an absolute must for those who love the sea and sailing. 
Registrations for all sailing crews are already open.
 
The boat of stories
Fantastic readings for children, on board of a boat  that crosses the Grado lagoon.
