Pile-dwelling site of Palù di Livenza

Visit one of the most interesting Neolithic pile-dwelling sites in northern Italy. Thanks to the perfect state of preservation of its archaeological remains, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

In the province of Pordenone, in the wetland that extends between the municipalities of Caneva and Polcenigo downstream of the Livenza river, you will find the pile-dwelling site of Palù di Livenza.

It is a settlement site inhabited since the ancient Palaeolithic (about 4900 B.C.). Three different types of pile-dwelling structures emerged from the excavations carried out, providing evidence of the inhabitation of this place until the recent Neolithic. Many materials have been found, from the stone objects and tools to the pottery ones.

The site of Palù di Livenza is one of the most ancient pile-dwelling sites in northern Italy. Thanks to the exceptionality of the historical dating of the finds (both settlement and non-settlement) and to the importance held by this archaeological area in Italy, Palù has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with other similar areas in the Alpine range (Prehistoric pile-dwelling sites in the Alps)"
This area, famous for its archaeological peculiarities since the 19th century, is also an area where various species of fen-birds and various hygrophilous plants live.

The archaeological finds discovered in the pile-dwelling site are currently preserved in the Archaeological Museum Western Friuli.
