Kobarid Museum

Kobarid Museum tells the story of the life of the soldiers of all nationalities that fought on the Isonzo Front. It describes in detail the events of the Twelfth Isonzo Battle and the breakthrough near Kobarid (Caporetto, Karfreit). 

Since 1990, the Kobarid Museum has been a focal point for the presentation of the heritage of the Soča Battle in Slovenia, Europe and the world. From a private collection, it has developed into a museum that has received Slovenia's highest museum award, the Valvasor Prize, and only a year later the Council of Europe Prize. It has organised more than 40 high-profile exhibitions at home and in major European capitals. The museum's mission is to protect and preserve national treasures and museum material in the field of safeguarding the heritage of the Soča Front, with an emphasis on presentation activities.

The Kobarid Museum is not a traditional war museum. It is a museum of man and his plight. It tells the story of the lives of the soldiers of all nationalities who fought on the front, and does not divide them into losers and winners. As Dr Branko Marušič once wrote: "It is not a museum of victory and glory, of conquered and trampled flags, of war and revenge, of revanchism and national pride. It is man who is in the foreground, the one who constantly says, loudly or to himself, to himself or to his fellow human beings, in the different languages of the world: "Damn the war!"

More and more visitors from all over the world are coming along the paths of the Soča Front and the Kobarid breakthrough, either to learn the stories of the soldiers or to discover the traces of their ancestors. The museum is open all year round and is thus always at the disposal of visitors to the Soča Valley.
