In Joseph Roth's La Cripta dei Cappuccini, directed by Giacomo Pedini, Natalino Balasso plays Francesco Ferdinando Trotta, a young Slovenian nobleman and the protagonist of Joseph Roth's famous novel, in a parable that traces the history of Europe in the first half of the 20th century. From the Great War to the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938.

Trotta is an awkward viveur, overwhelmed as much by inner upheavals as by the events of history, in an era of great change. Between dissolute friendships, decaying nobles, failed soldiers, tyrannical mothers, ambiguous relationships, adventurers and braggarts, against the backdrop of a shattered Central European world.
