Trieste Coastal Fishing Museum

Obiščite etnografski muzej, posvečen tržaški obali, kjer se hrani spomin na zgodovino in kulturno dediščino tržaškega območja.

In Santa Croce di Trieste, Križ in Slovenian, located at an altitude of 200 metres, on the edge of the Karst plateau is the Fishing Museum - Ribiški muzej, with a unique panorama of the Gulf of Trieste, an ethnographic museum dedicated to the Trieste coastline, where a piece of the history and cultural heritage of the Triestine territory is stored for future generations.

The museum exhibits many valuable fishing tools, nets, and equipment of high ethnographic value, as well as archival documents and historical photographs illustrating various moments in the daily life of people engaged in fishing. For the benefit of visitors, the exhibits are complemented by captions in Italian, Slovenian, and English.
Illustrated panels show several historical moments in the development of fishing, all the marinas along the coast, the fishing systems as well as the 1835 fishing regulation under which the inhabitants on the coast, of Slovenian ethnicity, became the holders of a coastal strip of sea that was one nautical mile wide.

The ships that were used for fishing, such as the bragozzo, the topo, the zoppolo-čupa, and the tonnera are reproduced in small-scale models, while the battellina-ščifa, the only one of its kind remaining today is exhibited in full scale.

The renowned tuna fishery in the Gulf of Trieste is illustrated with numerous photographs and sketches explaining the stages of the catch involving the entire community. Ferdinand IV, the King of the Two Sicilies, who was passing through Trieste in 1790, witnessed one of the catches. He is said to have been so enchanted by it that he awarded the fishermen with twenty gold coins.

Part of the museum is dedicated to traditional surface-supplied divers from Contovello, called the village of divers because for over a century this profession was handed down from father to son.

Visiting this museum will undoubtedly enrich your knowledge of the history of the territory of the municipality of Trieste and Duino Aurisina.

The Trieste Coastal Fishing Museum Cultural Association - Kulturno društvo Ribiški muzej tržaškega primorja, which manages the museum, was established by a notarised deed in the year 2000. Following 16 years of diligent work by its members and board directors, as well as with the support of private donors, it was possible to build and equip the museum, which was formally inaugurated on 25 September 2016.
