Open lab: freeze drying

All interested individuals are welcome to experiment with the new lyophilizer.

All interested individuals are invited to experiment with the new freeze-drier on 26 March 2025 and on 27 March 2025 at 16:00 at the Bio/n Future Food Laboratory. During the meeting we will test freeze-drying two types of apples from the Bilje Fruit Centre and agree on further experiments on freeze-drying of food raw and other materials.

We will discuss possible forms of community use and cooperation with the Chamber of Agroforestry and the Bilje Fruit Centre, which already has freeze-drying facilities. In the third part of the meeting, we will draw up drying protocols for different raw materials for which there are no precise procedures and instructions yet. This will help us to optimise energy consumption and, together with the lyophilizer manufacturer, to design a better user interface for operating the machine. The donation that bought the lyophilizer is a contribution from the participants of the ECSITE 2024 international conference (European Network Science Centres & Museums), who have donated part of their registration fee to offset the carbon footprint of the conference. The conference was organised by the Kersnikova Institute and took place in June 2024 at the Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre.
