Tolminc cheese, a PDO gem from the Soča Valley, boasts rich flavors. Enjoy tastings of diverse local cheeses and traditional Tolminski želodec in Tolmin town center!
The experience is possible by prior arrangement (contact info@dolinasoce.si) Tolminc cheese is a true symbol of the Soča Valley’s rich dairy tradition.
Nestled in Slovenia’s picturesque landscape, this hidden gem is renowned for its lush pastures, traditional farming practices, and exceptional cheeses. Local cheesemakers preserve age-old methods to craft unique flavors, with Tolminc standing out as the valley’s most iconic cheese. Tolminc cheese proudly holds the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. Made from raw milk of pasture-grazed cows, it boasts a flavor profile that evolves with age—mild and nutty when young, and robustly aromatic as it matures.
This PDO status guarantees authenticity and adherence to traditional production methods. The Soča Valley also produces exceptional sheep and goat cheeses, as well as unique varieties infused with wild herbs like oregano. This diversity makes it a paradise for cheese enthusiasts. In Tolmin, the valley’s heart, visitors can sample up to ten varieties of local cheeses, crafted from cow, goat, and sheep milk. During guided tastings, which last approximately 1 hour, local guide will share insights about the region’s cheese-making traditions, including how the local landscape influences production. Tolminc cheese, the star of the tastings, is a must-try for its PDO-certified excellence.
Visitors can also savor Tolminski želodec, a traditional dry salami, paired with locally produced juices. The tastings are suitable for groups of 20 to 55 people. After event, guests can relax at nearby bar (additional drinks are not included in the tasting fee). For those wishing to take home a piece of the valley, information on purchasing cheeses directly from local farmers will be provided. The Soča Valley, with its culinary and cultural heritage, is a must-visit destination for food lovers!
