Maša Klavora is the director of the Pot miru / Walk of Peace Foundation, an activist, and a coordinator who strongly believes in the Soča Valley, its natural and cultural-historical values, and potentials. She advocates for intergenerational, cross-sectoral, and cross-border cooperation, as well as for acting with honesty, responsibility, and transparency for the public good.
Maša is also a professor of physical education. "Sport provided me with a crucial foundation - to be truthful with myself and others, to possess a lot of energy, and to pursue either personal or collective goals." Her professional journey started in the Tolmin Students' Club, and she has since been involved as a member, coach, or president in various sports, tourism, or historical associations and federations, as well as civic initiatives. Additionally, she has served as a member of the Tolmin Municipal Council, as Vice-Mayor, and as Mayor.
In recent years, the Foundation, in collaboration with many Slovenian and Italian institutions and individuals, has developed a 500-kilometer cross-border cultural and walking trail, the Walk of Peace, stretching from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea. This initiative is widely recognized as one of the finest regional and cross-border projects in the area. The First World War heritage sites in Slovenia have been included in the UNESCO Tentative List, and together with partners from various European countries, efforts are underway to create a European Walk of Peace connecting locations marked by the First World War over a century ago.
Tomorrow, on Friday, February 16th, a special event in Kobarid will showcase this remarkable journey – from a local to a cross-border initiative, and now a European project. The Walk of Peace is part of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture 2025, Nova Gorica-Gorizia. Within the existing project framework, two sub-projects will be developed: the research and inventory of Austro-Hungarian cemeteries and Italian tombs along the Walk of Peace, and the Park of Nations, featuring cultural events and the creation of a guidebook.
