Slovenian Film in Italy series: Alpe-Adria Undergound

On 13 February 2025 at 20:00, the Gorizia Film House will screen the documentary Alpe-Adria Underground (2024).

On 13 February 2025 at 20:00, the Gorizia Film House will screen the documentary Alpe-Adria Underground (2024) with Italian subtitles, beginning a special chapter in the history of Slovenian cinema while exploring its groundbreaking expression. On this occasion, the authors Matevž Jerman and Jurij Meden will attend the screeening. As part of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia, the series consolidates the tradition of cultural integration in the cross-border area and opens new doors for dialogue between cultures.

The film is the work of writers and directors Matevž Jerman and Jurij Meden and draws inspiration from an article by Silvano Furlan, a Nova Gorica film critic and founder and director of the Slovenian Cinematheque. Furlan, a pioneer of research into the history of Slovenian avant-garde cinema, left an indelible mark on the art of film with his work. This documentary is not only a tribute to his legacy, but also an exploration of the Slovenian film avant-garde, which remains an inspiration for generations of filmmakers. The documentary features well-known names from the world of film, including Petra Belc, Vasja Bibič, Barbara Borčič, Greg de Cuir Jr., Jože Dolmark, Karpo Godina, Nerina T. Kocjančič, Naško Križnar, Davorin Marc, Miodrag Miša Miloševič, Varja Močnik, Ivan Nedoh, Igor Prassel, Tone Rački, Borko Radešček, Ivan Ramljak, Slobodan Šijan, Zdenko Vrdlovec, Matjaž Žbontar and Želimir Žilnik. The documentary is produced by Jerca and Andraž Jerič from the Temporama production company, and co-produced by the Slovenian Cinematheque and RTV Slovenia.

For many years, the Slovenian Film in Italy series has enabled Slovenian films, enriched with Italian subtitles, to cross linguistic borders and reach Italian audience. Enriched with current and restored gems of Slovenian cinema, the programme appeals to audiences on both sides of the border and connects them in the universal language of cinema. Between 2013 and 2023, the Slovenska kinoteka preserved and digitised 179 short films made during the socialist period (1945-1991), but mostly outside the dominant state production at the time. These films are now belatedly recognised as experimental and as an important, innovative part of Slovenia's film heritage, which is now visible again after a long time.
