Giuseppe Tornatore: director of Cinema Paradiso in Gorizia

Giuseppe Tornatore: director of Cinema Paradiso in Gorizia

Giuseppe Tornatore, Italian director and screenwriter, recipient of the Sergio Amidei award for original work.

The 43rd edition of the Sergio Amidei Film Festival ended in Gorizia, and the main award, the award for the author's opus, went to Giuseppe Tornatore this year. The outstanding Italian filmmaker is best known for his cult film Cinema Paradiso (1988), in which we follow a boy who falls in love with film in a Sicilian cinema. In 1989, the feature received a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and in 1990, the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Among his most recognised works are Everybody's Fine (Stanno tutti bene, 1990), The Legend of 1900 (1998), and Malèna (2000) starring Monica Bellucci. He dedicated his latest feature film, Ennio (2021), to the world-renowned composer Ennio Morricone, his long-time collaborator.

At the film festival, where it was possible to listen to Tornatore, the Agorà section came to life for the third time, part of the Tribute to a Vision film festival and part of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica – Gorizia. This section, curated by Steven Stergar, is created in the spirit of connecting and transcending the borders, and above all, it strives to promote film art in anticipation of 2025. It is about connecting two high-quality and internationally recognized film festivals, while hoping that the spotlights of the capital of culture next year will only elevate them in the eyes of European cinema. We wish to host more of such interesting and important guests as Giuseppe Tornatore at this year's Sergio Amidei festival.
