Curators for Mediterranea 20 selected

Curators for Mediterranea 20 selected

We are pleased to announce the selected curators of the Biennial of Young Artists of Europe and the Mediterranean - Mediterranea 20, which will take place within the official programme of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia.

Mediterranea 20, organised by the international network BJCEM - Biennial of Young Artists of Europe and the Mediterranean in collaboration with GO 2025! and ŠKUC, will present innovative and diverse contemporary art by young artists from Europe and the Mediterranean. The Biennale is scheduled to open on 31 May 2025.

60 applicants responded to the public call for curators. A jury composed of Federica Candelaresi (Executive Director of BJCEM), Emiliano Paoletti (Director of Polo del '900), Michelle Bowen (Director of UK New Artists) and Primož Nemec (Director of Mediterranea 20) selected the Slovenian curator. The second jury, composed of Federica Candelaresi, Michelle Bowen, Primož Nemec and Jernej Škof (programme coordinator at ŠKUC and producer of Mediterranea 20), selected the international curator. After a rigorous selection process, we are pleased to present the selected curators:

  • Tia Čiček holds a Master's degree in History of Art. For the last few years she has been working as a freelance curator, researcher and writer in the field of contemporary visual art. She is the artistic director of Škuc Gallery and co-creator of the World of Art School for Curatorial Practice and Critical Writing at SCCA-Ljubljana. In May and June 2024, she was an MQ Resident and a grantee of the Tranzit.org project supported by the ERSTE Foundation. Čiček is also part of the curatorial conversation platform bad curating inc. She is particularly interested in collaborative practices inspired by feminist and queer caring frameworks, challenging conventional exhibition making and contemporary art production.
  • Misal Adnan Yıldız is a curator, writer and researcher. He has directed Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Germany (2011-2014) and Artspace Aotearoa, Auckland, New Zealand (2014-2017). He is currently co-director of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2020-2024) with Çağla Ilk. Yıldız has co-curated major events such as the mobile video programme "Nightcomers" at the 10th Istanbul Biennial and the main exhibition of the 6th Ural Industrial Biennial in Yekaterinburg. He has curated numerous exhibitions around the world featuring artists such as Hito Steyerl, Ulrike Ottinger and Sarkis. He has collaborated with renowned institutions such as Montehermoso, HISK and Palais de Tokyo. In 2012 he was a finalist for the ICI Vision Award and in 2013 he received the Curate Award.

On 24 July 2024, the first meeting took place, where the curators introduced themselves to the team organising the Biennale and together with them, charted the course for future activities. The call for artists will be launched at the beginning of September 2024.
