"Bread – Food for the Poor or a Staple Food?”: On Attitudes Towards Bread Among Young People in Times of Scarcity and Abundance

"Bread – Food for the Poor or a Staple Food?”: On Attitudes Towards Bread Among Young People in Times of Scarcity and Abundance

A discussion on the importance of bread in times of plenty and poverty.

We will reflect on how to raise young people's awareness of the importance of bread in times of scarcity and abundance. We will reflect on the emotions that memories of bread evoke in different generations, and how to use baking heritage to encourage critical contemplation on the pitfalls of the development of the food processing industry. We will also answer the question of whether exploring the history of bread can help us understand multiculturalism, gender equality and find ways to explore local cultural specificities.

Participants: Melita Lemut Bajec (Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana), Martina Bratuž (Milojka Štrukelj Primary School, Nova Gorica), Jernej Murn (Mlinotest d.d., Rustje's House of Bread Ajdovščina) in conversation with Jasna Fakin Bajec (ZRC SAZU, School of Humanities, University of Nova Gorica).

The event is part of the EPISKOP project, which is part of the official GO! 2025 programme.
